ZOOL. Mammifère carnivore de la famille des Félidés, haut sur pattes, au pelage fauve tacheté ou rayé de noir, appelé aussi chat-tigre d'Afrique. La variété rencontrée surtout dans l'Ouest africain (...) a une fourrure plus grise, mouchetée de noir, mais il ne s'agit pas d'une sous-espèce: le serval est dimorphique [dimorphe] (Animaux 1981).
Prononc. et Orth.:[]. Att. ds Ac. dep. 1835. Plur.: des servals (ROB., Lar. Lang. fr.). Étymol. et Hist. 1765 (BUFFON, Hist. nat., t. 13, p. 233, note: Serval, nom que les Portugais habitués dans l'Inde, ont donné à cet animal, que les habitans de Malabar appellent Maraputé). Mot d'orig. port., prob. altér. de cerval qui signifie à la fois « qui ressemble au cerf » et « féroce, sauvage » (v. BUARQUE).
